A confused teenager discovers a stack of tapes recorded years earlier by her dying mother.

Joey and Alice have hardly enough to keep their heads above water. Alice's wealthy parents disapproved of their daughter marrying Joey but after a while, they had to admit that, together with Emily, their 6 year old little girl, they were a happy family. After Alice's sudden death, Joey takes care of Emily the best he can but doesn't manage too well. After losing his job, he reluctantly agrees with Emily going to live with her grandparents. But Emily isn't happy. When Joey finally realizes this, he fights back.

Mirsky once left the seaside town, leaving his wife Natalia with their young daughter Svetlana. Natalia married prosecutor Kochan. And the girl, in his person, found a sensitive and responsive father. The family lived happily. When the daughter grew up, Mirsky returned to the city and, having got a job at the ballet school, where Svetlana studied, very soon achieved her respect and love, and at the subsequent trial the right word on the rights to paternity. However, very soon the birth father became convinced that he had nothing to give his daughter, and he allowed him to return to the Kochan family.

In January 1989 the first Message to Man International Film Festival took place in Leningrad. This film, made during the festival, is a record of its events, guests and participants, such as the American director Leo Hurwitz, the Latvian director Ivars Seleckis, and the ballerina Natalya Makarova, among others. It also shows the “engine room” of the festival: the work of the main office and the PROKKa professional cinematographers’ club, guests being greeted and seen off. A charity evening with Natalya Makarova, a memorial service to commemorate the victims of the war and excerpts of documentary films presented at the festival are also featured.
